Abacus Construction Index UK  is a professionally edited directory of recommended construction websites

BRE (Building Research Establishment) is a world leading research, consultancy, training, testing and certification organisation delivering sustainability and innovation across the built environment and beyond. Many BRE publications are available through our subscription to the Construction Information Service.

BSRIA  a test, instrumentation, research and consultancy organisation, providing specialist services in construction and building services. Many of its publications are available via the Construction Information Service.

Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT) represents professionals working and studying in the field of architectural technology. CIAT is internationally recognised as the qualifying body for Chartered Architectural Technologists (MCIAT) and Architectural Technicians (TCIAT).

Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) The "international voice of the building professional, representing an unequalled body of knowledge concerning the management of the total building process". Their publications, which are available via the Construction Information Service include technical information sheets, guides and construction papers.

Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers A useful site for viewing CIBSE research, and publications such as Design Guides. You can register to use the site even if not a full CIBSE member. Many CIBSE publications are available via the Construction Information Service.

Communities and Local Government government department that sets policy on local government, housing, urban regeneration, planning and fire and rescue. Publications available to download include Good Practice and Guidance Documents, Legislation and Policy Document and Consultation papers.  (See also the Construction Information Service subscription database and Planning Portal website).

Content Online a collection of links to resources on the web, many of which provide free access to a range of standards and related information.

Federation of Master Builders (FMB) is "a trade association established to protect the interests of small and medium-sized building firms  and is now the largest trade association in the UK building industry".  Full text access to the Master Builder magazine is also available.

Health and Safety Executive  direct link to the Health and Safety in the Construction Industry section of the HSE website, which includes links to free leaflets, guidance, news and other information.

Images of England A digital library from English National Heritage charting England's 370,000 listed buildings, for use in private research or study. You will need to register using a valid e-mail address to gain access.

Information for Built Environment Students and Practitioners  features access to a free e-book, a bookshop, details of postgraduate built environment courses and other useful links.

Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE)  "the world’s largest membership organisation dedicated to the art and science of structural engineering". The Construction Information Service includes access to IStructE publications.

Planning Portal is the UK government's online planning and building regulations resource. The site has been designed as a one-stop-shop for planning and building services online to learn about planning and building regulations, apply for planning permission and building regulations consent, find out about development near you, appeal against a decision and research government policy.

Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS)  "the leading organisation of its kind in the world for professionals in property, construction, land and related environmental issues".  We subscribe to RICS Red Book Online.

UK National Statistics The government site for statistics, arranged by subject.

 

Estate Management and Property

College of Estate Management CEM provides distance education and training to property professionals and the construction industry. Its research reports are listed.

Estates Gazette Interactive (EGi) is the UK online news, research and information service for the commercial property market. Access using the password on our Username and Password page (or see staff), then register using a valid email address.

Housenet Check this UK site to view prices in the property market around the country.

Information for Built Environment Students and Practitioners  This is an information site which features access to a free e-book,  a bookshop, details of postgraduate built environment courses and other useful links.

National Land Use Database Selected data on brownfield and derelict land sites available, plus key published documents relating to data specifications, monitoring skills, etc

Property Law Website of barrister Gary Webber, providing a gateway to legal information for those in the Property market.

 

Planning and the Environment

CABE (the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment) is the government’s advisor on architecture, urban design and public space.

CASA Working Papers A series of over 80 fully-downloadable working papers from the Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis, UCL.

Cities/Buildings Image Archive is a University of Washington collection of digitized images of buildings and cities drawn from across time and throughout the world, arranged by country/city/town/building/site. A wide variety of styles and buildings, private and public, are included.

Commission for Rural Communities  advises government and aims to ensure that rural policy reflects the real needs of people living and working in rural England, with a particular focus on tackling disadvantage.

EarthWire United Kingdom Provides a daily overview of UK environmental news. Relevant stories from national, regional and local media are included  where they can be viewed by country, topic, or time period. A search engine allows users to search for issues and keywords in the archive. Press releases and news from research organisations, the public sector, and environmental organisations are included as well. With EarthWire's free email feed, you can get environmental news from UK, Norway, Serbia, and southern Africa emailed to you every day. Alternatively, check out EarthWire's RSS feed, available on the Information Skills for PCP moodle course.

ICE Virtual Library The Institution of Civil Engineers’ Virtual Library. Please note: many of the pages on this site are subscription only or charged on pay-per-view basis. However the ICE catalogue can be searched for free.

Intute: Social Sciences  provides access to a huge range of Internet resources relevant to the social sciences. Searchable by keyword, or you can browse through resources in broad subject areas.

Megacities Foundation Lectures, texts, reports and statistics on large cities.

Metropolis magazine is committed to the examination of contemporary life through focusing on the various design disciplines, including architecture, interior design, product design, graphic design, crafts, planning and preservation.

Natural England has been formed by bringing together English Nature, the landscape, access and recreation elements of the Countryside Agency and the environmental land management functions of the Rural Development Service.

Ordnance Survey Britain's national mapping agency, listing its products and data available.  We subscribe to the Digimap Ordnance Survey Collection.

The Planners Web This is a site of urban and regional resources, maintained by Planning Commissioners Journal (PCJ).

Royal Town Planning Institute The RTPI’s work involves promoting good planning, developing and shaping policy affecting the built environment, consistently raising the standards of the planning profession, supporting its membership through continued professional development, education and training for future planners.

Resource for Urban Design Information (RUDI) An independent unbiased service, the Resource for Urban Design Information (RUDI) is the largest web resource dedicated to urban design and placemaking.

Sapling.info The Architecture, Landscape and Planning Information Gateway features more than 1,000 reviewed website links and hundreds of pages of content.
