  • Move of Speech and Language Therapy, Radiography & Rehabilitation Books and Journals to City South Campus

Books and Journals to support SALT, Radiography and Rehabilitation Courses will be moved from City North to the Mary Seacole Library at City South during the week beginning 1st August. The move should be completed by August 5th and books available for loan ahead of the School moves later in August.

Books currently on loan can be returned at either Kenrick or Mary Seacole (or any Birmingham City University Library) and they will be transferred to the correct site.

Print journals for these Schools will be moved to Mary Seacole Library but please note that journals supporting Psychology will remain at Kenrick.

It will inevitably take a little time to bed such a large quantity of stock down in the Seacole Library, and we apologise for any inconvenience this may cause to staff and students during the transferral period. We will be monitoring stock over the coming year to identify use, and any material inadvertently left at Kenrick will be available for inter-site loan if required and transferred where appropriate.

If you have any questions, please contact Peter Ebrey: peter.ebrey@bcu.ac.uk

  • Change to the Inter-Library Loans Service for Journal Articles Not Available at Birmingham City University
  1. From 30th June 2011 we will be delivering all journal articles received from the British Library electronically.

  2.  Electronic delivery is faster and more flexible, allowing you to access articles at any time and wherever you are, via your University email address.

  3.  When your article arrives there will be a link in the covering email to access it. We will send you a text message to let you know the article is in your email inbox, ready for you to download.

  4. For copyright reasons, you will be able to print the article only once, although you will be able to view your document for 14 days from the date you downloaded it.

  5. After 14 days from the date of download, you will no longer be able to open the document.

  6. You have 30 days to download the document. If, after 31 days, you have not downloaded the document, you will no longer have access to it.

  7. If you have problems printing or downloading the requested articles please contact us.

  8. The electronic delivery service is currently available only for journal articles from the British Library. It is a pilot service which may be withdrawn at any time.

  • Post Graduate Students: Tell us your opinion of the services provided by Library and Learning Resources

We would very much like to hear your opinions (both good and not so good) about the services provided by Library and Learning Resources (i.e. Library and Academic Skills Centre services).

A clear understanding of postgraduate student opinion about our services will help us plan the best possible service that the current financial climate allows. Please let us have your thoughts and also please let us know if you would be willing to participate in a focus group to provide more detail about the issues.

It would be really be helpful if you could include the name of your course or area of study as it will allow us to place your comments in context.

Please reply to judith.andrews@bcu.ac.uk

Judith Andrews

Director of Library and Learning Resources

  • Wireless connectivity for students across Birmingham City University libraries

The following libraries have wireless access devices installed for connection to the student’s Birmingham City University Open Access network:

Conservatoire, Gosta Green, Mary Seacole Library, Margaret Street, Vittoria Street, Bournville, Kenrick on levels 2, 3 and 4.

Wireless connectivity allows users’ access to the Internet from their wireless enabled devices; whilst affording a greater level of flexibility in choice of location. There are many benefits to implementing wireless; amongst them cost savings and scalability and the students canvassed regarding the service all think it’s a good thing.

  • Personal Storage Facility

As part of the Birmingham City University commitment to provide effective networking Facilities to all Birmingham City University Students a Service is available to enable you to store your personal or course work data files to a central Network Server.

  • The benefits to you in using this service are that wherever you logon to the Birmingham City University Network the stored data files are always available.
  • You also have the option of creating additional folders in "My Documents" folder to enable you to store your files for easier File management.

To make use of this storage Facility you will need to store you files in the My Documents folder. Any files you copy to this folder are automatically saved on the server. Other Faculties may have different procedures e.g. accessing a Z drive - please ask the IT technicians in the relevant Faculty for guidance.

Restores

The Storage area is 200Mbytes in size and is backed-up on a daily basis. The backup is retained for a period of three weeks.

If you accidentally erase a file, you should be able to request a restore as long as you report the loss within the three-week backup period.

Please note that, in the event of a large number of restore requests, each one will be actioned on a "best endeavours" basis.

Please Contact your Faculty IT Staff if you require any additional information.
